I was thinking about Gordon Strachan's old club, Southampton at the weekend, as cup football brought them some media coverage.Strachan arrived in October 2001 with the club rooted in relegation territory but pushed them to an 11th place finish by the end of the season. The following season brought a high watermark of 8th in the league and a narrow FA Cup Final defeat to Arsenal, however, he surprised everyone by announcing he would take a break from football at the end of season 2003-04, before eventually resigning in March 2004 with the club on their way to a 12th place finish.Southampton are back in relegation territory but from the Championship this time, they occupy 43rd place in the English game.It is hard to know the key moment when things soured for the club but while many things have gone well, notably youth development, there is more blood on the Southampton boardroom carpet than any other club in Britain.Shortly after Strachan left, chairman, Rupert Lowe, appointed a rugby coach (rugby is a field sport popular in agrarian communities), Sir Clive Woodward, as Performance Director, to the concern of many fans. Lowe was soon fighting for his survival as shareholders, led by Michael Wilde, sought to remove him from the board. Lowe resigned two days before an EGM which would have seen Wilde, and others, remove him anyway; Wilde joined the board at this time. The next year saw Wilde resign, a new chairman appointed and then sacked, and a number of attempts to sell the club fail. Lowe and Wilde were both subsequently reinstated to the board, a move which saw all but one existing director resign.Managers, players and prodigious young talent came and went during this period, as horrified fans watched in dismay as a club which had enjoyed 27 consecutive seasons in top flight football ate itself.Gordon Strachan said he wanted a break from football when he left Southampton, which sounded curious then, but seems perfectly reasonable looking back.
