Celtic, Ireland, history and values

As a club "open to all" it is inevitable that if we continue to attract all, with each passing generation links to the culture and traditions of those who found Celtic Football Club will diminish. Many reading this have supported Celtic for over half the club's 121 year existence, and will have seen first-hand the overwhelming majority of those who have played for Celtic.  The youth of today, and forevermore, will never be able to make that claim.Celtic have proud Scottish traditions and Irish roots, but one of its core values is inclusiveness.  The Celtic fans of tomorrow will have a different ethnic, religious and cultural footprint than those of the past, so we should ask ourselves a few questions:What is it appropriate to pass on to future generations of Celtic fans and what is it possible to pass on?Not all football clubs chose to travel the same road.  You can cling to ethnic criteria, for example, but in a rapidly changing world this will even more rapidly cause decline.Celtic cannot pass on an ethnic, religious or cultural footprint.  Our fans of tomorrow will have different names, have skin coloured from a more varied spectrum, be of many and no religions and will have different economic and political objectives. This is an inevitable part of the progress of mankind and must be embraced.  So what values can we instil in the imagery of Celtic Football Club that is both appropriate and possible to pass on?The Celtic Story is all.  Tell the Celtic Story, who formed it, where they came from and why they did what they did.  Tell of the triumph and the many lost years; of Lisbon and Hampden in the sun, McGrory and Maley, McNeill and Johnstone. This is and always will be inextricably linked to Celtic Football Club no matter how many centuries the club endures.  Eventually, the day will come when the chairman of Celtic and the majority of fans know of no direct link between them and those who left Ireland, settled in Scotland and laid the foundations of our football club. But if we do our job well today, not only will we welcome such a future for our club, we will ensure that tomorrow's fans record the events Dr John Reid touched on yesterday with as much care and respect.Inclusiveness means taking a risk that those future generations may differ greatly from us.  Only the unwise-old find this regretful.  We should deliver Celtic to them resplendent with its true values.  That way we will ensure it will flourish and while it will renew itself many times in the future, it will always have a part of Maley, McGrory, Stein, you and me.I hope each and every one of you has a great weekend. Celtic interims report income and expenditure both up with debt and profit down

Celtic reported a solid set of interim results for the six months to 31 December 2008.Turnover increased 10% to 46.78m, as a result of being the only Scottish participant in this season's Champions League, increased merchandise sales and record season ticket sales.Operating expenses increased by 4.9%, largely as a result of the arrival of new players in the summer, part of a 7.01m player investment during the period.Bet debt fell a modest 2.66m to 0.97m as pre-tax profit fell to 8.36m (2007: 10.07m).Commenting on the results, chairman, Dr John Reid said, "Our midway position [in the season] allowed resources to be made available during the recent transfer window as they have been in past years. However general market conditions and particular circumstances curtailed the product of those endeavours this year."In the past we have been criticised, and indeed on occasions pilloried, for adopting a careful and business-like approach. We know well that we are much more than just a business, and for many of us supporting Celtic is a way of life. "The intense and perfectly understandable hunger for immediate football success that this fuels must always be balanced with the need to ensure that the underlying financial model - and the football success dependent upon it - can be sustained, not just in one year, but year after year. Others in football and elsewhere are finding out just how difficult achieving and maintaining that balance can be. "We know from experience that sound finances are necessary for football success, and vice-versa. While nothing can ever be guaranteed, we have managed to achieve this balance in recent times. Success has been delivered consistently on the football field in the last few years, and our financial model is proving to be reasonably resilient.  "But football is not immune to wider social changes and we cannot expect not to be affected at some point by the recessionary forces in the wider economy. Therefore we cannot afford to be the least bit complacent and we do not underestimate the challenges that will face us later in the year in both football and in financial terms." Read more...
